GRAPE RUST MITE

(Calepitrimerus vitis) this tiny eriophyid mite is about the same size as the bud mite. It was first found in Washington near Dallesport, Klickitat County, by Deirdre Prischmann in 2002. It was found at Cold Creek, Benton County, in 2004. We found it widespread in the Yakima Valley and in the Walla area in 2006 where it was causing losses estimated at 10 to 80%. In 2006, we discovered rust mites on Concord grapes. The pest status on Concords is unknown, but we will be monitoring these mites on Concords and wine grapes in the future.
